Aquaculture
Aquaculture
With the recent collapse of many fish populations, along with a number of new species being listed as endangered, aquaculture is now more important than ever. Wild fish have been exploited for generations and the oceans can no longer naturally meet the demand for seafood.Â
Aquaculture can help ensure access to healthy and environmentally friendly protein options to feed the world’s growing population, and compared to other farmed proteins like beef, pork and chicken, seafood has the highest protein retention, the lowest feed conversion ratio and the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.
Aquaculture is crucial to improving the health of our planet and the health of our population, but it needs to be carried out in a sustainable and socially responsible way, considering food safety and animal welfare. In short, the ability to understand aquatic ecosystems and evaluate options for sustainable fishing and aquaculture is dependent on data and data analysis – and we are here to help.
How Can Data Science Improve Fishstock Outcomes?
Formed in 2000 and now an internationally successful company, VSNi provides data analysis software for scientists, researchers and breeders within aquaculture. We want to see the challenges of global fish farming eradicated through the effective application of data, analytics and technology.
With our software tools you can:
- Analyse large, complex fish breeding data easily and efficiently
- Improve product quality by analysing all the factors contributing to fish health and growth and identifying problems before they arise.Â
- Assist in defining genetics that will improve your fish breeding linesÂ
- Genomic predictions offering significant advantages through being able to accurately predict complex polygenic traits including disease resistance; increasing rates of genetic gain; minimizing inbreeding; and negating potential limiting effects of genotype by environment interactions.
Our Aquaculture farming Software Solutions
VSNi create easy-to-use statistical software to help your aquaculture operations thrive. All our customers have access to fully documented user guides, knowledge bases and video tutorials. However, should you need more assistance you can even get help directly from the team who developed the software (us!).
Genstat
Within aquaculture industries, Genstat is widely used for the analysis of variance (ANOVA) when comparing treatment means. Its REML facilities are used for fitting complex linear mixed models to unbalanced, spatial or repeated measures data, and for modelling breeding data.
Genstat offers a suite of procedures for statistical genetics, including genomic prediction (or genomic selection), selection indexes, QTL linkage analysis and GWAS analysis. Fish breeding selection based on genomic information can make significant genetic improvements in programs and production systems.
Genstat’s data visualization options help to identify insights from your statistical analyses and truly get the most from your data.
AsReml
ASReml is powerful statistical software specially designed for mixed models using Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML). You can choose either ASReml-SA as a stand-alone tool, or ASReml-R to work in an R environment. Linear mixed-effects models provide a rich and flexible tool for the analysis of many data sets commonly arising in aqua breeding.
Broodstocks for most marine species are grown in tanks and phenotyped several times with small pedigrees. The use of ASReml to model the complexity of this data with several fixed and random effects is common practice.
